When we reached the gate of the immense stone wall that encircled the interior of the Underground, I immediately recognized it. This was the place where I had found Tamlin when he was trapped in stone and forced to be the Hunter.
We had passed none of the other places that I saw before, not the abandoned village or even the junk pile where Chloe had been trapped in an illusion of our living room. And it had taken significantly less time to reach this point than it should have.
“I chose the wrong path, didn’t I?”
Puck had shifted slightly closer instead of acting like being near me caused him physical pain. The carriage had stopped, the horse responding to some silent command while Killian and Tamlin approached the wall.
“It was called the Path of Destruction,” he murmured, attention on the swaying trees around us. He seemed alert to any possible danger, which made sense considering Killian’s threats. “We told you that.”
“Chloe was on that path, even if I didn’t know it at the time. If I had taken another way to the castle, I might have missed her.”
“Perhaps.”
Killian and Tamlin were far enough away that I knew they couldn’t hear us anymore and their backs were turned, so it was as close to being alone as Puck and I were likely to get. I shifted closer to him until my hip pressed against his. The move was slow, giving him every opportunity to pull away if he wanted to.
He didn’t pull away, instead raising his arm so I could settle more solidly against his chest. The warmth of his body did more to chase away the chill than even the heavy furs tucked around. I laid my cheek right over his heart, the steady beat like a metronome against my skin.
If he was nervous or scared, there was nothing in his body language that would reveal it.
When I shifted to look up at him, Puck was staring down at me. His face was so close to mine that his eyes filled my vision as if I was being consumed by purple fire. Given everything, it seemed crazy to act like a lovesick schoolgirl with so much chaos around me. But I needed something simple, something easy, and Puck had been that for me from the very beginning. Even if it meant that he hid parts of himself away where I couldn’t reach.
He kissed me softly, gently, more for comfort than anything else, as if he had become a living and breathing security blanket. His body moved against mine, but he didn’t grab me or pull me closer, letting me take the lead. It made me wonder if his gentleness was preparing me for something else, like he wanted to stand in stark contrast to whatever would come later.
And then I heard his murmur against my lips.
“Oh, no.”
Breaking the kiss, I followed his gaze to where the other men stood. The narrow trail ended suddenly at the wall, with no gap or opening that would allow us to continue.
